VICE PRESIDENT FOR ADVANCEMENT (Posted November 30, 2012)

Longy School of Music of Bard College seeks an ambitious, innovative, creative professional with fundraising and leadership experience to continue building the school's development functions.

Longy is a small, world-class conservatory and community music school that is undergoing a process of growth and radical change unprecedented in its 97-year history.  It is evolving from a free-standing institution, to a branch campus of Bard College, a top-ranked liberal arts college. Longy is expanding its educational offerings and accessing a wider community of musicians, scholars, philanthropists and world leaders than it has in the past. It is transitioning from a place that has largely been focused locally and inwardly, to one that engages with communities all across the United States and embraces a mission of social change through the study, teaching and practice of music.

At a time when audiences for classical music are diminishing, Longy is building new constituencies and new audiences in unexpected places, from the inner city neighborhoods of New York, Los Angeles and Boston to the fields of California’s Central Valley. Longy’s next Vice President for Advancement must have a passion for the expansion and democratization of music education, appreciation and participation.  The successful candidate will be a fundraiser with ideas and the energy and nerve to carry them to fruition.  The school’s leaders are looking for someone who knows how to attract volunteers and raise money for its traditional, core programs, as well as to recognize and capitalize on the possibilities presented by its exciting future.

Responsibilities of this position include:

  • Create and implement a strategic plan to build constituencies and increase philanthropic revenue threefold.
  • Manage a caseload of prospects with the capacity to make major gifts.
  • Staff the President and other key leaders in their philanthropic contacts and leverage their time appropriately.
  • Deepen and broaden Longy’s philanthropic relationships with its current donors.
  • Manage a small team.

Requirements:

  • A track record of cultivating, soliciting and closing major gifts from individuals in ways that are both systematic and opportunistic.
  • Experience identifying prospects and donors who are not alumni, grateful patients or members.
  • Dynamism, energy and an exceptional work ethic.
  • The ability to exercise independent judgment and to speak and act on convictions.
  • Bachelor’s degree, advanced degree preferred.

Inquiries and applications should be directed via email to:
